Music can be many things. Including funny.
Before Open Mic started, my wife and I went to see Sedge in the duo he was in at the time playing at a local pub. There was smoke I think, and pretty intense stage lighting, even though it was supposed to be one of those 'chilled out acoustic' sessions.
This is probably not an accurate memory, but for some reason I always imagine they were playing 'The Fear' by Travis, which probably makes this story a little over 20 years old. That feels about right. Anyway, a punter stands right in front of the stage, before everyone, and slowly nods his head in appreciation. The song builds, the rhythmical nodding becomes violent head banging, out of sync with the music. So enthusiastic is the movement that he spits his false teeth onto the stage at Sedge's feet. With the lights and the smoke, neither musician is aware, but we, and the rest of the audience, see it clear as day.
In the same way that a comedy villain glances shiftily around, before twirling his moustache and stealing a baby, the punter surveys the crowd, reaches down retrieving the teeth, and reinstalls them. Imagine a seagull trying to swallow a whole, discarded sandwich at once. His prize reclaimed, he slinks off into the darkness.
I share this with you because I know not all blogs need to be inciteful head scratchers or exercises to make your fingers hurt. Little bits of entertainment are good too.
So it's Sunday, it's almost lunchtime, what better time to go to Toyah and Robert's house for some fun. For those who've never witnessed this series, most Sundays Toyah Willcox and King Crimson supremo, Robert Fripp, play light hearted rock covers in their kitchen on YouTube. To me, this is one of the best episodes, because it shows that even the most gifted musicians are capable of making an absolute cobblers of it, and not giving a monkeys.
So here's the link, Toyah and Robert performing 'Lonely Boy' by The Black Keys. Be advised there is swearing, and Toyah's wardrobe choice is.... "interesting". Go and check out the rest of their videos and subscribe. Their versions of Motorhead's 'Ace Of Spades' and Green Day's 'Basket Case' are also excellent. Have a great what's left of your weekend
(You'll have to follow the link yourself to YouTube, it's age restricted)
